The SMA House of Studies in Nairobi , Kenya , East Africa
SMA House is one of a number of religious houses situated in the area called Karen on the outskirts of Nairobi. Students from these houses attend the nearby Tangaza College which is affiliated to the Catholic University of East Africa. Seminarians make up about 50% of the student population of over 1,000 at this College. As well as the faculty of Theology, Tangaza has 7 other Institutes which provide training and formation in the various disciplines and areas of interest to lay and religious men and women. Bachelor degrees and Diploma certificates are awarded to candidates who successfully complete their programs.
In the SMA House at present (2007) there are 22 students coming from Africa (19), Asia (2) and USA (1). The African students come from Kenya, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin Republic, Nigeria, Côte D'Ivoire and Burkina Faso.
International living is an integral part of the formation of young missionaries and SMA House has a strong international presence both among staff and students.
The cost of living (and education) in Nairobi, a busy and generally affluent city, is high. At the same time, SMA House is close to one of the largest slums in the whole of Africa – Kibera. SMA students are engaged in pastoral work at weekends and a number of them work in projects associated with helping people in Kibera and other similar areas.
