We are all children of God; hence, we are brothers and sisters in God's Family.
If we see that our brother or sister is struggling to survive, or is in dire need, and we have more than we need, it is normal to help out!
In all the countries where SMA sends missionaries, one of the needs that always surfaces is "school fees." Parents want their children to go to school but often cannot afford the required fees. Most people find themselves scrambling just to survive.
Education doesn't seem so urgent when you are struggling to get daily food for your family, or take care of a sick family member. Respecting the dignity of each person, we can help them by developing their skills through education and training, so they become self-sufficient and can support their families.
The Joy of Reading
When Jennifer Viola, SMA Lay Missionary, began her ministry with the Orphans in the Ilemela AIDs Project, in Mwanza, Tanzania, she was open to serving in whatever way her talents were needed. Most especially, Jen brought her heart, energy and her skills as a Recreational Therapist to her new ministry.
Often mission is a response to the immediate needs of those you are sent to. It is a journey taken together as you get to know your new African brothers and sisters. It is not in great things, but in the day to-day living. As you get to know the people, also you grow in respect, care and concern for them and their needs. You ponder, "What will help this person to grow and realize his/her potential?"
Poverty is rampant and the needs are great. Education, often, is taken for granted in the West. But everywhere, going to school is a key to helping children prepare for their future. In Africa, children have ability, talents and skills, but often lack the means to get an education.
When Jen received donated books for the children, she said, "This was a first!"
Often in the Project, they give out supplementary food, blankets, clothing, but had never before given books to the orphans. The books were received with great joy.
