Jason Goodwin, A-La Davis, and Justin Melvin have all spread their wings at Queen of Angels School and know the thrill of flying higher. Jason is an eighth-grader who recently won a four-year scholarship to high school. A-La is a budding opera singer who speaks eloquently of her recent trip to Ghana. Justin is now a student at nearby Arts High School in Newark, preparing for a career as a professional dancer.
Jason earned his scholarship after participating in the Wight Foundation program, a Newark, New Jersey academic enrichment group that prepares qualified youth for higher educational opportunities. Recommendations to the program are based on grades. Students receive academic, leadership, and time-management training. They attend the program in the summer and - during the school year- after school and on Saturdays. Jason attends the program for five hours every Saturday. "I like it a lot. The level is very high,” said the soft-spoken teen who studied math, English, and Spanish. He is also active in his East Orange church choir and serves as a junior counselor for younger children at the United Community Corporation in Newark. An aspiring lawyer, Jason said he and his family were still considering which high school he will attend next year.
A-La, also in eighth grade, studies voice at Newark Comm unity School for the Arts and at the prestigious summer program offered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. She traveled with a group of other youngsters to Ghana over the Christmas break. The trip was sponsored by the East Orange Police Athletic League. "It was very educational and emotional," said the articulate young woman who was particularly moved by a visit to the sites of the notorious slave trading in a past era.
In a recent letter to QA, Justin described his work at Arts High School and was excited about the scholarship he recently won to dance with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company in New York, one of the world's leading professional troupes. "We are very proud of them all," enthused QA Vice-Principal, Sharon Massey. |
