The most important requirement
to become an SMA missionary priest is a passionate desire to serve
God as an ordained priest in mission, particularly in the challenging
and wondrous environment of Africa. The missionary life requires
one to be a man of faith, open, dedicated, flexible, down-to-earth, and committed
to growing in the spiritual journey. As members of an apostolic
community known for hospitality, SMA missionaries must be able
to relate well to others and able to both give and receive support.
A good sense of humor is an asset!
The special mission
of the SMA priest, as envisioned by our Founder - Melchior
de Marion Brésillac - is to minister to
the "most abandoned" people
and to assist those people in becoming self-sufficient
and able to minister to their own, both spiritually
and physically. SMA missionary priests serve in the
16 countries of Africa,
and in missions in the United States.
If
you feel you may be called to this life-giving work in our Christ-centered
community, please get in contact with us. We want to meet you.
Interested, but uncertain? Do not worry. Vocations often
come to light gradually, and sometimes discerning them requires
help from others who have walked the path. We will support you
in your journey.
General Requirements
Single, Catholic men between the ages of 18 and 40
(negotiable). International
candidates can be accepted if they live in the United States and hold legal immigration status.
Associate Priest Program
